Description
When they were first introduced in the early 1860s, lever action rifles caused a major leap forward in firearms technology. They had an exceptionally high rate of fire when compared to their muzzle-loading counterparts, and gave their user a considerable amount of firepower. However, one of the main drawbacks of early leaver-action rifles was underpowered ammunition, a problem that became evident when settlers encountered larger animals like buffalo in the western territories. Legendary firearms producer John Moses Browning recognized this problem and created the Winchester Model 1886. Browning chambered the Model 1886 in the high-powered and readily available 45-70 cartridge which had a reputation for its effectiveness on buffalo.
